One Child at a Time
"I used to think that success meant making a million dollars. Now a little older and wiser, I’ve found that my greatest sense of satisfaction comes when I give a part of myself to someone else. Through Communities In Schools, I’ve been able to mentor young men and help them realize their full potential in life. Through these relationships, I’ve learned that the success of our nation depends on a generation that is desperately in need of good role models. It only takes a little time, energy and commitment to make a difference in the life of a child. I believe my work as a Communities In Schools’ mentor is my greatest achievement."

Sign created by students to say thanks to their mentors

Students created a sign for mentors to show their appreciation!

The stories were touching and the laughter was heartfelt.  CIS Mentors came together to share experiences and celebrate success at the annual CIS Mentor Appreciation event.

CIS began the year serving 56 students and added 41 new mentors to now serve 97 students!  "It's been a great year," said CIS Executive Director, Tracy Oster.  "The commitment from this great group of volunteers is amazing!  They are making a difference every day!"

The schools see the difference the mentors are making as well.  Several of the school staff were on hand at the celebration to show their appreciation to the mentors as well.  "As a 5th grade teacher, I am so happy for these kids who get to meet with a mentor," said an elementary school teacher.  "It makes such a huge difference, attendance is better, students get along with their peers better and they just seem to be doing better all around."

CIS is currently recruiting mentors to begin next school year.  So call or email CIS today for more information on becoming a mentor.  Just like our mentors that were celebrated at the mentor appreciation event, next year you can make a difference!

We've all heard the stories and read the reports of under-achieving boys, particularly boys of color. In Federal Way community-minded men of color set out to do something about low achievement. The result is the Heritage Leadership Camp - a series of day long workshops developed for middle school boys. The camp is a resounding success. Participants are gaining new-found confidence, have fewer behavioral issues, are improving academically, and are encouraging more positive attitudes among their classmates.
