One Child at a Time
"I used to think that success meant making a million dollars. Now a little older and wiser, I’ve found that my greatest sense of satisfaction comes when I give a part of myself to someone else. Through Communities In Schools, I’ve been able to mentor young men and help them realize their full potential in life. Through these relationships, I’ve learned that the success of our nation depends on a generation that is desperately in need of good role models. It only takes a little time, energy and commitment to make a difference in the life of a child. I believe my work as a Communities In Schools’ mentor is my greatest achievement."

Equality

We are all born equals, but we are not born with equal opportunities.

Mentor Match

We are all born equals, but we are not born with equal opportunities. Every child requires fundamental needs to learn and grow to their fullest potential including food, clothes, school supplies, transportation, people who care about them, and sometimes extra academic support. These needs are even greater with low income students, the largest groups served by Communities In Schools of Federal Way (CIS). Though the schools try to support every student, they do not have the resources to do so. That is why Communities In Schools of Federal Way, along with your generous support, is so important for breaking down barriers to success through innovative partnerships and individualized programming that supports the whole child.

Supporting Academic Success

"Every student that I helped with scholarships essays for the ACT Six scholarship made it to Phase II.  Last Thursday I conducted a leadership workshop and lecture about non-cognitive traits.  The students were individually interviewed by a mock-board that consisted of members of CIS, College Success Foundation, Carleton College, and a Financial Advisor from Merrill-Lynch.  After I spoke with them this morning, every student told me that they had done remarkably well during the Phase II of ACT Six.” Joseph Colon: School Outreach Coordinator at Federal Way High School.

Safe Places to Go After School

School Outreach Coordinators at Sacajawea Middle and Mirror Lake Elementary Schools provide after-school programs for students.  These programs include VIP Access homework help, soccer, basketball, arts and crafts, and yearbook clubs.  These activities provide students with a safe place to go after school, a healthy snack, and offer experiences that would otherwise be out of reach for them.

Providing Supplies and Support Through Partnership

Thanks to a generous donation from Red Canoe Credit Union, every school in the Federal Way School District received new school supplies to prepare them for a fresh start to the new school year. CIS coordinated volunteers to assemble the back packs full of supplies-giving students a head start for success.

Communities in Schools of Federal Way stretches available resources as much as possible.  Your financial support is the engine that ensures these students have a chance at a positive future. You help make the difference between a drop out and a college scholar, and a teen with no direction to a teen with high hopes and dreams. Together, we can give students the resources they need to become positive, productive adults.
