"For as long as I can remember I have been driven to succeed, and I thought that success meant making a million dollars. Now a little older and successful in the world's eyes, I've found that making money for my own gain isn't what I want to leave as my legacy. I found that my greatest sense of satisfaction comes when I give a part of myself to someone else, in an effort to help their life blossom.
Heritage Leadership Camp was the perfect opportunity for me to
give meaningful help to young men. The ability to help fuel the educational
flames that could compel young men to reach their full potential was and is
very exciting. Once I started mentoring, I was really amazed at all I had to
give. I was even more amazed by all that I receive.
There are two
truths that I have learned while mentoring these young men. The first is that
we don't have "at risk youth," we have an "at risk nation".
If we don't get involved, our nation will not endure. The second truth is that
each one of us is a mentor, though we may not like what our mentoring says
about us. By not investing in the lives of our children, we communicate that we
have other priorities. But we can make a difference with just a little time,
energy and commitment for a child.
